For day hikes around Kathmandu, we recommend bringing: comfortable hiking shoes, at least 2 liters of water, snacks and lunch, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), rain jacket, first aid kit, and your ID/passport for park entries. Don't forget your camera to capture the beautiful views!
The best time for hiking in Kathmandu Valley is during autumn (October-November) and spring (March-May). These seasons offer clear mountain views, pleasant temperatures, and stable weather. Winter (December-February) is also good but can be cold in the mornings. Avoid monsoon season (June-September) due to heavy rains and poor visibility.
Most trails around Kathmandu Valley are well-marked and can be done independently. However, a guide can enhance your experience by providing local knowledge, cultural insights, and ensuring your safety. For first-time visitors or challenging trails like Phulchowki, we recommend hiring a guide.
Fitness requirements vary by trail. Easy trails like Dhulikhel require basic fitness, while challenging ones like Phulchowki need good cardiovascular fitness. Most trails are suitable for people who can walk for 3-6 hours with breaks. We recommend starting with easier trails and gradually building up to more challenging ones.
Some areas require entrance fees: Shivapuri National Park (NPR 100 for Nepalis, NPR 500 for foreigners), Nagarjun Forest Reserve (NPR 50 for Nepalis, NPR 200 for foreigners). Other trails like Nagarkot, Chandragiri, and Champadevi don't have entrance fees, though some may have parking charges.
Yes! We regularly organize group hikes to various destinations around Kathmandu Valley. Check our upcoming events section or follow our social media for announcements. Group hikes are a great way to meet fellow hikers, ensure safety, and learn about local culture and nature from our experienced guides.
Always inform someone about your hiking plans, carry enough water and food, check weather conditions, start early to avoid afternoon heat, stay on marked trails, carry a first aid kit, and have emergency contacts saved in your phone. Consider hiring a local guide for unfamiliar trails and never hike alone in remote areas.
